Engineered Plastics for Semiconductors

 

​Plastics, or more precisely, polymers, play several important roles in the semiconductor industry, particularly in the fabrication and packaging of electronic components and integrated circuits (ICs).

Some ways plastics are used in semiconductors:

  1. Wafer Handling and Storage: Plastics are used for the handling and storage of silicon wafers. These wafers are extremely thin and delicate, and plastic carriers or cassettes protect them from contamination and physical damage during transportation and storage.

  2. Cleanroom Packaging: Plastic materials are used in the cleanroom environment to package and transport semiconductor components. These materials are chosen for their low particle generation, as cleanliness is crucial in semiconductor manufacturing.
